Saturday, 25 November 2017 : TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2017

What a way to end November 2017 !

On the last Saturday of November 2017, I was given a golden opportunity to watch the annual major event of the Hong Kong entertainment industry, TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2017 (TVB马来西亚星光荟萃颁奖典礼2017) live in Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting, Genting Highlands. I was notified via email on 20th November that I was among the 250 winners selected from the TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2017 Voting Mobile App. The prize was 2 VIP tickets to attend TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2017 Awards Presentation. Collection of the tickets took place at a booth located outside Arena of Stars.

The event commenced at 8.30PM, with live television broadcast on Astro CH310/311 Wah Lai Toi (华丽台)and Astro CH326 TVB Jade (翡翠台)happening concurrently. It started off with an opening performance by various Hong Kong artistes, along with a glamorous red carpet entrance of the nominated award recipients and emcees. The event was then carried out with the presentation of the award My Favourite Top 15 TVB Drama Characters (最喜爱TVB电视角色), followed by the presentation of the award My Favourite TVB Most Improved Actor & Actress (最喜爱TVB飞跃进步男女艺员). A performance called King of Variety (综艺之王)was then carried out by the hosts of the event, ahead of the presentation of the award My Favourite Top 15 TVB Drama Characters (最喜爱TVB电视角色), My Favourite TVB Variety Program (最喜爱TVB综艺节目), My Favourite TVB Enrichment Program (最喜爱TVB资讯节目) and My Favourite TVB Host in Variety Program (最喜爱TVB节目主持). Famous local singing sensation MinChen 林明祯 then made an appearance onstage by performing a medley of her best-selling hits.

After the atmosphere-uplifting performance, the awards presentation was then carried on with the presentation of the award My Favourite Top 15 TVB Drama Characters (最喜爱TVB电视角色) and My Favourite TVB Onscreen Couple(最喜爱TVB荧幕情侣). The event then proceeded with another exhilarating performance with famous Hong Kong singers performing the top 5 nominated My Favourite TVB Drama Theme Song (最喜爱TVB剧集歌曲), followed by the presentation of the award. Soon after the performance, the atmosphere was approaching its peak as the event carried on with the presentation of the most anticipated award, namely My Favourite TVB Actor & Actress in a Supporting Role (最喜爱TVB男女配角) and My Favourite TVB Best Actor & Actress in a Leading Role (最喜爱TVB男女主角). Just before the announcement of the final award, My Favourite TVB Drama Series (最喜爱TVB电视剧集), Hong Kong's famous Cantopop singer Hubert 胡鴻鈞 made a spectacular performance onstage, keeping the audience excited while maintaining the suspense. Once the award was presented, all of the Hong Kong artistes, performers and media partners were invited onstage for a toast ceremony and a group photo session. The event concluded at 11.10PM.

As a TVB supporter since young, I'm very grateful and thankful that I was given the chance to watch the awards presentation live. I was both surprised and delighted to be one of the lucky winner of the contest. It was certainly an honour to be able to participate in such a major event of Hong Kong's entertainment industry. Lastly, with TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2017 ending on a high note, the Hong Kong artistes had their hard work recognized and paid off as the awards they received were pretty much well-deserved. Congratulations to all of the award recipients ! 👏🎉🎊

Sunday, 08 October 2017 - MULC Paws : Zoo Negara Volunteering & Visitation

On Sunday 08/10/2017, MULC Paws organized an animal welfare volunteering event held in Zoo Negara. The objective of this event was to expose MULC members to wildlife animal welfare and allow participants to experience the daily tasks of a zookeeper.

Early in the morning at 7am, MULC members started to gather in the foyer of Monash University Malaysia. Registration was carried out, while light breakfast was being distributed to the participants. Upon arrival of all the participants, a briefing was then delivered by the Organizing Chairperson (OC). 10 minutes later at 7.30am, we departed from Monash University Malaysia headed to Zoo Negara, Ampang, which is situated north-east of Selangor. We arrived at our destination at around 8.15am after a 45-minute journey on the road. Once arrived, we assembled at the staff entrance and were greeted by the person-in-charge, followed by a briefing. During the briefing, we were informed that Zoo Negara has a strict attire rule that volunteers must obey, and that our break time was scheduled at 10am. After the briefing, we were then divided into 3 separate groups, which were Bird Aviary, Children's World and Savanna respectively.

At around 8.45am, all 3 groups of us started our respective work. The friendly zookeepers delegated tasks such as cleaning the animal enclosures and feeding the animals to us according to our capabilities. An hour of relatively intensive work later, it was time for the aforementioned rest time. As we were given a 45-minute break, we decided to have a short tour around the zoo. We visited several parts of the zoo, but due to the massive size of the zoo, it wasn't long before it was time to resume our volunteering work. We headed back to our respective work area to pick up where we left off. At 12.30pm, it was finally time to conclude our volunteering work. We expressed our heartfelt gratitude towards the zookeepers for all the assistance given to us while we carried out the jobs. In return, they expressed their appreciation towards our volunteering work in Zoo Negara as help is always needed to maintain the animals' welfare.

After the completion of our volunteering work, we were given approximately an hour of free and easy time. During this time, we continued our tour of the zoo in groups. We were able to cover most of the places of the zoo. Of course, it would be an absolute waste if we didn't visit the panda enclosure, so we agreed to spend the rest of our time at the Giant Panda Conservation Centre. At around 2pm, we've decided it's finally time for lunch. We headed to the staff canteen to fill our stomachs with some local delicacies. After a well-deserved lunch, we shared our experiences of being a zookeeper among each other. It was then followed by a group photo session. Once we were done with the group photo session, we finally bid farewell to Zoo Negara and began our journey back to campus. At 3.30pm, we safely arrived at Monash University Malaysia. This memorable event was then ended.

To finalize, it was a heart warming event as I was able to contribute in taking care of the welfare of both domestic and wildlife animals. It goes without saying that animals should never be hurt, both physically or psychologically because they are worthy of every bit of love and respect that they show us unconditionally. From this event, I was able to gain a valuable and memorable experience as a zookeeper. The daily tasks of a zookeeper might not be remarkably noticeable to some, but their work requires acknowledgement and appreciation from all parties because the little things that they do everyday play a big role in animal conservation.

Friday, 22 September 2017 - MULC Tropicana : PD Beach Cleaning + PD Ostrich Farm Visit

On Friday 22/09/2017, MULC Tropicana organized a beach cleaning volunteering event held in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. The objective of this event was to develop the habit of taking care of the environment among MULC members. In conjunction with the beach cleaning activity, this event also included a visit to PD Ostrich Farm.

Early in the morning at 7am, MULC members started to gather in the foyer of Monash University Malaysia. Registration was carried out, while light breakfast was being distributed around. After all the participants of the event had arrived, the leader of Tropicana subgroup and the Organizing Chairperson (OC) gave a short briefing and allocated the participants to respective transport. At 8am, we departed from Monash University Malaysia in a convoy of two formations. We first set our journey headed to Pantai Saujana, Port Dickson for beach cleaning activity. One and a half hour of car ride later, we arrived at our destination. Once arrived, we assembled nearby a hut and a briefing was given by the OC of this event. In the meantime, cleaning tools and equipment were distributed and the participants were divided into 3 separate groups covering different areas of the public beach.

At 10am, we started the cleaning tasks in groups. We were astonished by the cleanliness of the beach because to our surprise, the beach was generally without any noticeable unwanted trash. We were further informed that despite the beach being a popular picnic attraction for families, the cleanliness was kept at an acceptable level by a team of cleaners hired by the city council. However, the beach wasn't 100% clean as there were still tiny bits of rubbish scattered around, with some of the waste being recyclable items. Thus, we proceeded with our assigned cleaning tasks. The weather was fairly good for a day out at the beach, therefore it didn't cause much of a strain for us. After an hour of cleaning, we've finally decided that it was time for a rest. The beach cleaning activity was then called to a halt and we were given a free and easy time.

During this free and easy time, some of the participants enjoyed a relaxing walk along the beach, while others engaged in beach sports which include frisbee and volleyball. About an hour of fun and relaxing activities, it was time for lunch. We gathered around a shady spot and enjoyed a mini picnic with the relaxing sounds of the waves and the refreshing wind from the sea breeze accompanying us throughout the duration of our lunch. At 1pm, after our stomach were filled, we started to pack up our belongings and carry on with the next agenda in the itinerary - PD Ostrich Farm visit. But before leaving the sandy shores, we managed to take a group photo for our memories. At 1.10pm, we left Pantai Saujana and set trail to PD Ostrich Farm with the same convoy of two formations.

Around 35 minutes of journey by car, we've finally arrived at PD Ostrich Farm. We were greeted by the person-in-charge and were given a briefing. At 2.30pm, we started our tour around the farm, where we were given opportunities to feed the animals. Besides, the person-in-charge was kind enough to grant us chances for free rides on animals and free tasting of freshly-plucked fruits. The tour was time-consuming, which took up about 100 minutes of our scheduled event. We were supposed to volunteer in assisting the farm handlers and get involved in farm management works such as cleaning the animal enclosure once our tour was completed. However, due to the fact that it was late and we were tired (as observed by the person-in-charge), the volunteering activity was cancelled.

After the tour, we took a group photo with the person-in-charge and he expressed his gratitude towards our visit to the farm. We took a short rejuvenating break and without further delays, we set path to a PD Famous Cendol, a dessert stall nearby the farm to indulge in a taste of the refreshing local dessert. At 5pm, we finally bid farewell to Port Dickson and were headed back to campus with, once again, the same convoy of two formations. The journey back took around 90 minutes and at last, we safely arrived at Monash University Malaysia at around 6.30pm,. This fun and relaxing event was then concluded.

To sum up, it was indeed an enjoyable event. I've learnt that in order to take care of the environment, we must first understand and appreciate the beauty of mother nature. Each and everyone of us should carry out our responsibility and do our part in maintaining the picturesque environment's well-being because we're all a member of the Earth.

Fun fact : Do not attempt to visit animal sanctuaries with bright-coloured attire.

Sunday, 10 September 2017 - MULC Tropicana : Urban Hijau Visitation

On Sunday 10/09/2017, MULC Tropicana organized an urban agriculture event held in Urban Hijau. Urban Hijau is an organization with a purpose of encouraging people to bring environment sustainability to life. The objective of this event was to enable the participants to gain extra knowledge on urban agriculture.

Early in the morning at 7am, MULC members started to gather in the foyer of Monash University Malaysia. Registration was carried out, while light breakfast was being distributed around. Half an hour later, a briefing was given by the Organizing Chairperson (OC) of this event. We then departed from Monash University Malaysia headed to Urban Hijau located at Kampung Sungai Penchala. The journey took approximately 30 minutes. When we arrived at Urban Hijau, the sky was very gloomy and it was raining as well. However, the rain slowly turned into a light drizzle and soon came to a stop. We were then greeted by the person-in-charge and were given a briefing on the background of urban agriculture.

At 8.30am, we started off our volunteering activity with some cleaning tasks. As Urban Hijau was located at an urban community area, there were impractical items lying all around the place. Thus, we were separated into several small groups to clean up the trash as much as possible. After some tiring cleaning workout, we were given a short break where we had some refreshments to revive our energy. It was around 10am when we were called to assemble again. This time, we were assigned to move piles of wood chips from the entrance to a specified location. We formed a productive human chain to transfer the wood chips to the designated area more effectively.

Another short break was given to us at 11am, followed by a farming activity. We were given a briefing and demonstration by the person-in-charge on the process of making a compost. We participated alongside as well and we were given step-by-step guide on the function of each process. 45 minutes later, we were done with the compost. It was about time to call it a day, and not to be forgotten the time for a group photo with the person-in-charge. They expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards our participation in this volunteering activity. At 12pm, the event was officially ended.

As the scheduled end time for this event was at 2pm, we had ample time to head for lunch. We decided to fill our stomachs with some fast food at McDonalds. Due to the fact that we were exhausted, we decided to stay a little longer at McDonalds to have some bonding session. At 1.30pm, after our well-deserved lunch and a mini chat & chill session, we hit the road and began our journey back to campus. At 2pm, we safely arrived at Monash University Malaysia. This educational event was then concluded.

To sum up, it was indeed an educational event where I was able to gain a whole lot of extra knowledge on urban agriculture. From this event, I was able to understand that we can all benefit from the social impact of urban agriculture. By carrying out environmentally-friendly farming practices, we are able to create a sustainable and improved environment that enhance the well-being of the community.

Sunday, 20 August 2017 - MULC Tropicana : Tzu Chi Recycling Event

On Sunday 20/08/2017, Tropicana subgroup organized its first event of Semester 2, 2017, i.e. Tzu Chi Recycling Event. The objective of this event was to raise awareness on the importance of recycling and its impact on the environment. This event was held at Chinese Taipei School in Shah Alam.

Early in the morning at 7am, MULC members started to gather in the foyer of Monash University Malaysia. We started to introduce ourselves to each other, while a light breakfast was distributed. Half an hour later, the Organizing Chairperson (OC) gave a briefing about this event and we depart from Monash University Malaysia. We first headed to Tzu Chi's office in USJ Taipan for a briefing session. At 8am, Tzu Chi's volunteers gave us an introduction to allow us to understand the purpose of recycling. We even had a fun mini game session where we were assigned to Vintage and Modern groups respectively to carry out a role play. The game improved our knowledge on the difference in generations as well as the changes and its impact on the environment. After the game, we bid farewell to the friendly Tzu Chi volunteers.

At 9.30am, we started our journey headed towards the recycling point at Chinese Taipei School. The journey took approximately 30 minutes. At 10am, we reached our destination and were greeted by another group of Tzu Chi volunteers. They separated us into small groups to help in different stations of the recycling point. Some of us carry out sorting processes, while others perform carry-and-weigh tasks. With great cooperation and swift actions, we managed to lend a helping hand to the Tzu Chi volunteers at the recycling point to complete the recycling tasks by the expected time. After the packing and cleaning up of the recycling point, we had a brief sharing session where each of us share our thoughts on this event. They even offered us fruits as a sign of appreciation for our help. It was then followed by a group photo session with the Tzu Chi volunteers. At 11.30am, the recycling event was officially ended.

As the scheduled end time of this event was at 2pm, we had ample time to head for lunch. We planned to fill our stomachs with fusion food at Mohd Chan Restaurant. Despite being lunch hour, the restaurant wasn't open for business. As a result, we came up with another idea and went to Old Town White Coffee at Kota Kemuning to have our well deserved lunch instead. After a taste of local delicacies, we hit the road once again to head back to campus. At 1.30pm, we safely arrived at Monash University Malaysia. This meaningful event was then concluded.

To summarize, as I was taught to perform the 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle) since young, this event was no surprise to me as it had already been a habit. However, this event had improve my bonding and communication with other MULC members as I was able to share my experiences in protecting the environment with them. It is particularly important for all of us to take good care of the environment because it is our duty and responsibility as a part of the environment. Nevertheless, it was indeed a valuable experience for each of us as we learned important lessons in protecting mother nature.

05 & 06 May 2017 : Warman Competition 2017

Warman Competition is an annual event held in Monash University Malaysia. It is a design & build project which involves of the Mechanical & Mechatronics disciplines from the School of Engineering. The main objective of this project is to develop and enhance essential skills required for future real world purposes among participants such as leadership, teamwork, crew resource management, error recovery and engineering knowledge.

Warman Competition 2017 was held on 05 & 06 May 2017, with participants in teams of four members each competing with each other in order to obtain the best overall performance. The main task of this year's competition was to design and build a simulation of an automated system to sort, transport and deliver ore (golf balls) and waste (squash balls & racquetballs) to their respective bins through a terrain (track). The system with the shortest runtime and the most accurate sort and delivery system will be crowned champion.

I was allocated to group SWAR14, along with another three members from Mechanical Engineering. Being in an all-Mechanical-students team, it was really a challenge for all of us as we were required to utilize programming skills to command Arduino to perform and complete the tasks of the competition.  After numerous meetings and discussions, we've finally came up with a mutual agreement on a solution, i.e. two members work on the mechanical design of the robot while two members work on the programming of the robot.

Weeks passed by like lightning as the early bird challenge was due. Me and my teammates had put in much effort to perform the very best, but unfortunately we weren't able to make it in time to earn the 100% early bird bonus. As days gone by quickly, the stress and pressure of not completing the early bird run was piling up and it soon affected our performance. We didn't give up just yet. We continue troubleshooting and seek assistance from friends and seniors.

The crucial moment had finally arrived. The major competition was within few days time and we were yet to complete our early bird run. We stayed back after classes daily a few days before the competition to try our best to beat the deadline. With full determination and persistence, we continue our testing while we camped overnight in campus. The frustration and disappointment was overwhelming but we finally managed to get our robot to function properly and sealed the 75% early bird score just a few hours before the actual competition.

It was time for the competition. The 1st heat was carried out on Friday while the 2nd heat was carried out on Saturday. My team were able to clinch a fairly respectable result in the 1st heat, but our results were messed up for the 2nd heat as the robot didn't perform well. However, we were thankful that the early bird score was recorded as that score was used to replace the not-so satisfactory result. It was indeed a blessing to us as we were able to get a good results for the competition despite having multiple failures during the testing stages.

In final words, it was certainly a valuable experience to us with lots of lessons learnt, capabilities discovered and achievements unlocked. I'm sincerely grateful to be working with a team who'd put in loads of efforts and spent countless sleepless nights to meet our goals. A huge shout-out to my teammates of SWAR14 ! Thank you so much for the hardwork ! Great job ! 😊👏

Sunday, 25 June 2017 : Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant 2017 Grand Final

It was a remarkably memorable day on the last Sunday of June 2017. My friend, Tiffany 郑亦庭, whom I knew from KC1, was one of the 8 finalists who'll be competing for Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant 2017 (Astro国际华裔小姐2017) on this lovely night at Dewan Wawasan Convention, Menara PGRM.

My friends and I were able to receive entrance tickets with compliments from Tiffany to support her live during the final. Being in the supporters' seating area, it was indeed a great first-time experience for us as we cheered at the top of the lungs to give our full support to Tiffany. Our cheers and applauds meant a lot in encouraging Tiffany's confidence on-stage throughout the competition.

The event started off at 8PM, with live television broadcast on Astro CH310/311 Wah Lai Toi (华丽台) happening concurrently. It started off with an opening performance by Alvin 鍾瑾樺, along with a glamorous entrance of all the contestants. The event was then carried out with the Talent Segment (才艺表演), followed by the Swimwear Segment (泳装环节). Famous local singing sensation Nicole 赖淞凤 then made an appearance onstage by performing a song from her debut album. The beauty pageant contest was then progressed with the Q&A Segment (问答环节). The event reached its turning point as the audience mood was further uplifted with Nicole 赖淞凤 performing Jessie J's 《Flashlight》with the 8 competing pageants, followed by a spectacular performance by Hong Kong's famous Cantopop singer-songwriter, Pakho Chau 周柏豪. It was then the time for the announcement of winners, with the judges making final discussions and recalculations of points. The event concluded at 11PM.

With MACIP 2017 Grand Final ending on a high note, my friend Tiffany was awarded the First Runner-Up (亚军), Miss Body Beautiful (完美体态女神) and Miss Best Talent (才艺女神). Her performance on-stage was amazing, especially the incredible Latin Dance Performance (庭之诱惑)during the Talent Segment, which left all the judges stunned with her unbelievable dancing skills. She deserved the awards, as well as the applauds from the audience as her great efforts to perform the very best were impressive.

Being a friend of Tiffany, I'm very proud of her success in MACIP 2017. Not only did she achieved an extraordinary result, but she also realized her childhood dream. With her superb performance, she's already the champion in our hearts. Last but not least, congratulations to Tiffany for her success in MACIP 2017 and wishing her all the best in her future. We'll always support you ! 😊 ❤️️ 💕
